You have a latitude and longitude — from a GPS device, a drone flight log, a Google Maps pin, or a field report — and you need the LSD (Legal Subdivision) at that location. Not the section or quarter section: the specific 40-acre parcel number.

This guide walks through the conversion, explains what coordinate precision you need, and shows a complete worked example.

Why LSD Specifically? {#why-lsd}

The Dominion Land Survey system runs from large to small: meridian → township → range → section → quarter section → LSD. For most regulatory work in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, the LSD is the required level of detail.

A quarter section covers 160 acres — that's four LSDs. An AER well licence, a surface lease agreement, or a pipeline rights-of-way description identifies the parcel at the LSD level. A GPS reading from a well pad or access road needs to resolve to a specific LSD before it can go on the form.

Step-by-Step: Convert Lat/Long to an LSD {#step-by-step}

Step 1: Copy Your Coordinates

GPS devices and field apps output decimal degrees — the standard input format for Township Canada. Your coordinates will look like:

  • 52.2856, -113.8114
  • 51.0447, -114.0719

In western Canada, longitude is always negative (west of the prime meridian). If your device outputs degrees-minutes-seconds (e.g., 52°17'08"N 113°48'41"W), Township Canada accepts that format too.

Step 3: Read the LSD Result

Reading left to right: LSD 3, Section 15, Township 39, Range 1, West of the 5th Meridian. That places this parcel in west-central Alberta, southwest of Red Deer. The LSD (03) is what goes on the AER well licence.

The result also shows:

  • The quarter section the LSD falls within — LSD 3 is part of the SW quarter of Section 15, useful for cross-referencing surface lease records that use quarter-section notation
  • The LSD boundary outlined on the survey grid, so you can visually confirm the right parcel before copying the description
  • Neighbouring LSDs in the same section for context

Step 4: Verify on the Map {#verify}

Before copying the LSD into any document, check the highlighted parcel against a known physical reference — a road intersection, a water body, the access track you drove in on. A GPS reading taken within a few metres of an LSD boundary can legitimately fall in either parcel. The visual check takes ten seconds and prevents an error that takes much longer to unwind.

The technician enters 03-15-039-01W5 on the AER well licence amendment. If the surface lease uses quarter-section notation, they reference it as SW-15-039-01W5 — the same parcel at coarser resolution.

How Precise Do Your Coordinates Need to Be? {#precision}

An LSD covers roughly 800 × 800 metres at prairie latitudes. Coordinate precision determines whether the result is reliable:

Four decimal places gives about 11 metres of accuracy — more than enough to identify the correct LSD in the middle of a parcel. It is not enough to determine which side of an LSD boundary a point falls on if the GPS was taken right on the line. When coordinates are only two decimal places, treat the LSD result as approximate and verify against a known landmark.

Common Coordinate Sources and Their Precision {#sources}

Different tools give different levels of precision. Here's what to expect:

Handheld GPS (Garmin, Trimble field units): 4–7 decimal places, 3–5 m accuracy. Fully reliable for LSD identification.

Smartphone GPS (Google Maps, field data apps): 5–6 decimal places, 3–10 m accuracy. Usually sufficient for LSD identification; results from dense urban canyons may be less reliable due to signal multipath, but prairie field locations are generally fine.

Dropped Google Maps pin: The coordinate display shows 6 decimal places, but manual pin placement may introduce 10–50 m of positioning error depending on the zoom level. Drop at maximum zoom for the best accuracy.

Drone flight logs: 5–7 decimal places, high absolute accuracy if the drone had a GPS fix at the time. Reliable for LSD identification.
