Alberta CCS / Pore Space Tenure Layer

Status: Shipped Issue: #113Data source: Alberta Energy GeoView (Carbon Sequestration ESRI REST endpoint)

Overview

A bundled set of four map layers covering Alberta's carbon-capture and geothermal tenure framework: pore space tenure areas, CCS project boundaries, CCS injection wells, and geothermal tenure boundaries. All layers render on the DLS grid alongside the existing AER Wells layer.

Components

ComponentPurpose
app/config/mapLayers/dataCatalog/ccsPoreSpaceRights.jsPore space tenure polygon fills
app/config/mapLayers/dataCatalog/ccsProjectBoundaries.jsCCS project boundary outlines
app/config/mapLayers/dataCatalog/ccsInjectionWells.jsCO₂ injection wells (circle layer)
app/config/mapLayers/dataCatalog/geothermalTenure.jsGeothermal tenure boundaries
Label variants for each (*Label.js)Label rendering
app/config/mapLayers/index.js (data catalog)Catalog entries with descriptions and icons

Map presentation

Each layer uses a distinct colour and opacity tuned to overlay cleanly on the DLS grid and AER Wells layer:

  • Pore Space Rights: indigo fill at 30% opacity — large polygons covering tenure zones
  • CCS Project Boundaries: outlined polygons — identifies named project areas
  • CCS Injection Wells: circle layer styled distinctly from AER production wells
  • Geothermal Tenure: separate fill colour for the geothermal-specific tenure class

Layers can be toggled independently in the data catalog UI.

Source pipeline

  • Pulled from gis.energy.gov.ab.ca/Geoview/CarbonSequestration (and the geothermal endpoint)
  • PMTiles archives served from maps.townshipcanada.com
  • Refresh cadence: see operations runbook

Customer-facing context

Why this matters

Alberta's CCS and geothermal tenure layers are a new class of land tenure not visible in any of the existing AER public viewers in a DLS-grid context. The combined layer set lets developers, GIS teams, and tenure analysts evaluate parcels for CCS overlap, identify adjacent injection activity, and confirm boundary geometry without cross-referencing the AER GeoView portal separately.

  • AER Wells (companion energy infrastructure layer)
  • Oil & Gas Fields (oilGasFields)
